Social media facts that can help improve your business, and help you get customers that the big companies are missing

An increasingly large amount of companies are investing in social media, and this will inevitably have a positive impact on marketing and businesses as a whole.

What does the future hold for social media and how will the changes affect the companies using it?

How social media websites are helping companies get customers.

1. More companies are beginning to invest in social media

An increasing number of small companies are investing in social media, and are becoming more aware that it can be a useful tool when it comes to competing with larger businesses. Product promotion through social networking is increasing, because of the increasing number of people joining social networks and spending a vast amount of time on these sites.

2. Larger companies block the use of Facebook/Twitter

Get ahead of over 50 per cent of larger companies. It is fact that 50% of large organisations block the use of social networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter in the workplace. By allowing your employees to use social media and outsourcing social media development, you are taking steps to reach a customer base that larger companies are missing.

Social media websites are growing, and have a promising future.

1. Social media introducing an e-commerce system

Facebook and other social network sites will eventually create an e-commerce payment system to rival PayPal. This would enable businesses to sell their products via social media websites, and the customer could complete the whole transaction within that site.

2. Businesses will integrate their websites with social networks

This will enable companies to use their website alongside social networks. By using a simple website builder, companies will be able to link the two elements together, enabling them to get the best of both worlds. Traditional websites will have links to social sites, and vice versa, meaning that customers can view and purchase from both with ease.

Statistics demonstrate success of firms using social media between October and December

Companies that wish to capitalise on social media traffic should start implementing their social strategy now rather than waiting for Christmas. As October is the second busiest month of the year for social media visits we are expecting over 800 million hours to be spent on social networks this month.

Social media continues to be one of the fastest growing industries. Between September 2010 and September 2011 visits to Social Networks has increased by approximately 11%

We took a look at the UK Internet visits to the Social Networks each month between 2009 and 2011. We then averaged those visits across the months to see the seasonal trends with social media.

Social media usage is lowest during the beginning of the year and increases throughout the year towards a peak in December. Over the last three years December has always seen the peak of online visits and in fact last Christmas Day Facebook overtook Google for the first time ever in terms of UK Internet visits.

The graph shows that social media has two seasonal trends. The first is an early summer peak in visits in June, before a decline in visits in July and August. This seasonal dip in July and August can be explained by summer holidays where people are more likely to go abroad and therefore less likely to be using social networks.

Bring A Pound To Work Day

MediaHeads have helped one of our clients, CompareYourMobile.com, get great radio coverage today, as well raising money for Douglas Macmillan.

In Staffordshire and Cheshire, it’s Bring A Pound To Work Day – where Signal Radio (Signal 1 and Signal 2) encourage people to donate money for Douglas Macmillan Hospice.

MediaHeads thought this would be a great opportunity for CompareYourMobile.com to promote themselves, as well as raising money for a great cause.

Our idea was to ask people to put CompareYourMobile.com stickers on their pound coins and offer 5p for every pound with one. This attracted a lot of attention and got CompareYourMobile.com mentioned on Signal Radio.

Twitter to become even more popular due to Olympics?

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is allowing athletes, at the London 2012 Olympic Games, to post updates of their experiences on Twitter; as long as they do not promote products and services.
