Wikipedia.org, WordPress.org, Mozilla.org are down

Today, Wikipedia.org, WordPress.org and Mozilla.org are all down, along with thousands of other websites, in protest of the SOPA and PIPA bills (even Google has censored its logo in protest).

As Wikipedia.org says, ‘Imagine a world with without free knowledge. For over a decade, we have spent millions of hours building the largest encyclopedia in human history. Right now, the U.S. Congress is considering legislation that could fatally damage the free and open Internet. For 24 hours, to raise awareness, we are blacking out Wikipedia.’

This message displays, on Wikipedia.org whenever someone tries to view a Wikipedia article.

The English version of Wikipedia will be shut down for 24 hours – to protest the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) introduced in the House of Representatives and the Senate version, the Protect IP Act (PIPA) – but should be back online tomorrow.

But Wikipedia isn’t alone.

Google blotted out its logo to voice concern over the US Congress legislation concern, intended to crack down on online piracy.

Google placed a black redaction box over the logo on its much-visited US home page to draw attention to the bills, while social news site reddit is shutting down later in the day.

Last month, the founders of Google, Wikipedia, reddit and other internet giants said, in an open letter, the legislation would give the US government censorship powers “similar to those used by China, Malaysia and Iran.”

“We oppose these bills because there are smart, targeted ways to shut down foreign rogue websites without asking American companies to censor the internet,” a Google spokesman said on Tuesday.

Reddit said it will shut down for 12 hours – from 8am to 8pm (0000 AEDT to 1200 AEDT Thursday) – to protest the legislation.

“We wouldn’t do this if we didn’t believe this legislation and the forces behind it were a serious threat to reddit and the internet as we know it,” reddit said.

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales announced the plans to shut down the site in a message on his Twitter feed.

“Student warning! Do your homework early. Wikipedia protesting bad law on Wednesday!” Wales said.

“This is going to be wow. I hope Wikipedia will melt phone systems in Washington on Wednesday. Tell everyone you know!” he said.

Volunteer-staffed Wikipedia turned 11 years old on January 15 and boasts more than 20 million articles in 282 languages.

SMS Marketing Stoke

SMS Marketing, a.k.a. Text Message Marketing, is an incredibly effective way to promote a business or organisation.

If you have a list of mobile numbers, it’s really easy to get involved with SMS Marketing; making existing customers aware of a new product or service.

If you don’t have a list, we can provide you with SMS Marketing contacts (based on age, gender, geography and more). For example, a Taxi Company looking to make people aware of a taxi service around Stoke-On-Trent can text anyone who is located 10 miles around the centre of Stoke who has opted to receive these messages (around 10,000 mobiles).

What a great way to make 10,000 people instantly aware of your Taxi Company or other business.

With Text Marketing, the SMS will be sent directly to the phone and, unlike email marketing, users will almost guaranteed to read the message. The text message sender name can be any name or number up to 11 characters, for example Tom Taxi so users will instantly recognise who the text is from.

Best of all, SMS Marketing is included in our MediaBoost package so creating the text message content is included in our Digital Marketing solution – The sending of the text message is charged at 4p + VAT per text.

To find out more about SMS Marketing, please call us on 01782 450 111 or email enquiries@mediaheads.co.uk.
